OUR INSPIRATION

Behind the name,
a story to tell

Nomadic roots. Exceptional cheeses.

WHY THE BEDOUIN

But where did the inspiration for the name Le Bédouin come from?

It all starts with Jean-Pierre Salvas, co-founder of Fromagerie Polyethnique, who shares this story with us:

The Bedouins, nomadic peoples of the Middle East, are at the heart of many legends. It is said that they were great traders, transporting spices, fabrics, oils, and mail—but also valuable knowledge. They possessed expertise in many fields, including stargazing to navigate the desert, literature, languages, mathematics, and the sciences. Their expertise was not limited to trade but also extended to the culinary arts.

As they exchanged food during their travels, they absorbed the knowledge of every civilization they encountered along the way. A legend tells of a Bedouin butcher who salvaged a portion of a camel’s stomach to make a gourd. By pouring camel milk into it, the enzymes in the stomach are said to have created the very first kefir.

This story is what inspires us. By marketing our products under the name Le Bédouin, we pay tribute to a people whose journey is said to have shaped the earliest chapters of cheese-making history.
